Lab Two

Web Introdution and Microsoft Word

Preliminaries

In this lab, we are going to get some practice with Microsoft word. We are going to learn to use some useful features. We are going to obtain some information from the WWW and apply some of the information from Chapter 1.

Goals

    1. Find where to locate computer terminology on the WWW.
    2. Learn to copy and paste from a Web page into a word document.
    3. Apply knowledge learned
    4. Create a report with header, page numbers, footnotes, and altered line spacing.
    5. Obtain knowledge that can be used in all of your classes: How to produce a report using a word processor.

    To Do

    Report

You are going to write a report. The report is going to have two sections. the first section will contain terminology that you are going to copy and paste directly from a web page. Whenever you use information (copy it directly or just use the information) from any source, whether it is the WWW, a journal, text, etc., you MUST cite your reference and make it clear where you obtained the information. When copying information directly from a web page it is extremly important that you make it clear that the information was copied and the source from which it is copied. If you do not, that is considered to be plagaurism and that can result in disciplinary action as severe as dismissal from school and a negative mark on your permanent record. That is an important lesson that should be taken away from this lab. The second section will require you to learn from your text book and class notes. The report format is described below followed by the report details.

    1.Report

The first page of your report must contain a title. The words of the title must have a font size of 18, be in bold, and centered. Type in the title. Then mark the text you just typed in. To mark it, either hold the left mouse button down and drag it over the text or hold the shift key down and move the cursor across the letters. Then click on B on the formatting tool bar to make it bold. With the text still highlighted, click on the font-size arrow and select 18. With the text still highlighted, click on the centered button.

The content of your report must be double spaced. When you specify double spacing, it is in effect from that point forward. To change line spacing, click format, paragraph, indents and spacing tab, under spacing, select the double space option.

You must have page numbers. To add page numbers click insert, page numbers, bottom of page, center.

Your document must have header. The header must have 3 lines:

    1. your name
    2. CS115
    3. The Date
Use Insert Date and Time to get the date.

To get the header, click View, Header/footer . In the area displayed, enter the specified data. Close it when you have completed entering the data.

Top, Bottom, left, and right margins must be 1 inch. Use file, page setup, margins tab to change margins.

The first line of each paragraph in Section 2 must be indented .5 inch. Drag the top arrow on the ruler bar to the right to change the margin setting. If your ruler does not appear, click view, ruler to get the ruler.

Section 1 must be properly footnoted as described below. and Section 2 must have at least two footnotes. Word will automatically number your footnotes for you. To insert a footnote, with the cursor positioned where you want the footnote number to appear, click insert, footnotes, footnote, auto number, ok . Word will place the footnote number at the cursor and place the footnote at the end of the current page where you will be able to insert your reference material. To continue entering your data, simply press the up arrow and the entry point will return to the point following the footnote number.

    2.Section 1

Section 1 of your report should contain the label Basic Terminology. This should be on a line by itself, left justified. It should be in font size of 14, bold and underscored. How to change the font size and bold are described above. With the text still highlighted, click on the Underline on the formatting toolbar.

You should have an introductory paragraph that states that the information contained in this section was copied directly from from a web page. You should list in the paragraph the terms that are going to be defined.

    1. Type in the term Hardware. It should be left justified, bold, and underlined.
    2. Click here to visit a terminology web site. Click on the Term of the Day link.
    3. Read the definition presented. How does it relate to what we learned in class?
    4. Mark the definition presented by the web page by pressing the mouse button and dragging it over the text. Click on the Edit menu option of the tools menu of your browser, then click on Copy. Click into your word document, making it active. Place the cursor where you want the text to appear, then click on the Edit menu item of the tool bar of Microsoft Word and select Paste and the data from the web page will be copied into your Word document.
    5. It must be clear that this data is a direct quote. The best way to do this is to indent it and single space it. Mark the text. Press the tab key to indent it. With the text still highlighted, change the spacing back to single. Click on Format, Paragraph, Indents and Spacing, select Single spacing, Ok.
    6. Then you must foot note the data as described above. You can directly copy the URL (web page address) of the web page directly into your footnote. To do this, go to the Address line of your web browser. Mark the address: "http://www. . . . " that appears there. Then Click on Edit, Copy. Then go back to your word document, into the footnote and click on Edit, Paste and the data will be copied from the browser into the Word document.
    7. Repeat the same process for the terms:

    3.Section 2

Using your text and class notes as reference, in your own words provide a brief discussion of the following topics: You must have at least two footnotes in this section.

    4.Save your report

Save your report on your diskette.

    3.Print your document

    Hand In

Staple all pages of your document together and submit them.
